2 The Reporter — Issue #2, 2017 Message from the International Justice " C o m p a s s i o n and courage are two additional principles which every lawyer m u s t p o s s e s s . Compassion leads a lawyer to accept the cause of the unfortunate, the underprivileged, and those who are the object of scorn and public disfavor. Courage brings the lawyer to press these causes and to defend the rights of these persons with full abilities and a stout heart. Compassion and courage are essential if a lawyer is to be a true servant of the law for all the people. One who would serve the law and attempt less than complete loyalty to these principles is unworthy of the status of a lawyer, or of membership in this Fraternity."— P.A.D.'s Book of the Ritual (Page 10) Over the years there have been events that have been trying, that have been frustrating, have tested my mental and physical fortitude, and at times have taken my breath away. In these times I have often found myself reflecting on two of our core values. Compassion and courage. To me they go hand in hand, they balance each other. The following quote sums up how I see this balance. "You need a balance between compassion that comes from your heart and courage from your belly. If you have too much courage you c a n b e c o m e d e s t r u c t i v e t o y o u r s e l f a n d t o others, but if you have too much compassion you can be paralyzed by your desire to please others. It is finding the balance that is best."— The Resilience Centre In the last several months there have been events that have left a devastating mark, whether at the hands of a fellow human or by natural disaster. Now, more than ever, we need to come together as a community to show understanding, appreciation, and kindness toward one another. In the case of natural disasters, we know what to do, how to respond and do not hesitate to act. After Hurricane Harvey the P.A.D. Austin A l u m n i C h a p t e r c o l l e c t e d d o n a t i o n s a n d information on help to fellow Texans displaced by the Hurricane. After Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, The Knoxville Alumni Chapter established an on-line auction with proceeds being donated to the Puerto Rican relief efforts. Other situations, the man-made ones, bring around uneasy conversations that we would rather avoid. But we shouldn't, we must have the courage and compassion to discuss the real issues and, while it may be difficult at times, respect different points of view. This takes the right balance of compassion and courage. It also requires candor, which needs us to not only speak openly but to listen openly. "—It is that subordination of one's own personal gain or an advantage for one's client to a higher principle which makes candor a habit and a lawyer's word a universally accepted bond."— P.A.D.'s Book of the Ritual (Page 9) Fraternally, Kathleen "Kitty" Maloney The P.A.D. Ritual Our Fraternity was founded on certain principles and ideals: integrity, compassion, courage, professionalism, service, diversity, and innovation. It is the purpose of our Ritual to preserve these principles and ideals in concrete terms to ensure their continuity. The Ritual expresses the fundamental ideals and principles of Phi Alpha Delta.
