Grace Magazine | www.fbcglenarden.org 33 words on it and told me that he had my back. This was the start of my journey to starting my company. Grace: What three pieces of advice do you have for someone looking to start their own business? Rhim: I took the severance pay from leaving IBM, but I did not have any money saved towards starting my business. I did not take a salary for the first year I was in business. I left my dream job and realized that the writing was on the wall when my team went from 14 to 3 people. I cried like a baby when I went in to tell my boss that I was leaving to start my own company. My work was valued at IBM, but my boss understood my need to leave. As a result, I was hired as a consultant to IBM for one year. When you are operating according to God's purpose, He will give you the provisions. God put me in the position to have free rent for my organization for the first five years. My three pieces of advice include the following: 1) Be committed and be passionate. Make sure that you are passionate and that what you are doing is your purpose. Be so committed, that your failure is not an option. You will have many obstacles, but your commitment and passion will help you push through. 2) Become a subject matter expert. Never stop learning! Learn everything you need to learn about your area of expertise. Be willing to take advice from people that have been where you are trying to go. 3) Be willing to assess, reassess and change. You must be willing to adapt while staying true to your mission. You will receive offers to do things or partner with people, but you must always make sure that what you do is in alignment with your values and God's plan. Grace: What words do you live by? Rhim: My favorite Bible verse is "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). I believe that if you do good to people, it will come back to you. Finally, a lot of people become a business owner because they feel that they can't work for someone else. Anyone who thinks that they are their own business must answer to someone or they will be broke. Grace: How may someone who would like to hire someone to work in their business, needs social services, or would like help with starting a new career get in contact with you? Rhim: You may visit The Training Source by visiting the Facebook page or our website is http://thetrainingsource. ipower.com/. The contact phone number is 301-499-8872 and the email address is contact@trainingsource.org. It is definitely worth noting that Kim Rhim has been recognized as the Woman Business Leader of the Year for Prince George's County, which is a rare achievement for the head of a non-profit organization. Her organization is an accredited program recognized by federal, state and county governments. The Training Source is one of only 11 businesses in Prince George's County recognized as a Center of Excellence and meets all 67 best practice standards.
